It’s a long weekend for us thanks to President’s Day, so it’s nice that Rock has a day off tomorrow. My DE class has prevented me from doing my favorite things, but I sneak it in when possible. I’m living and breathing Unix now and familiarizing myself with my Mac’s BSD environment. My classmates are an amazing sort … contractors and military members from around the globe with varying degrees of Unix and Linux experience (and a cool bunch to boot!). As an end-user analyzing imagery and researching multiple databases (in a previous life), I never realized how damn good Unix was, until now. Aah, the things I took for granted. OK, enough already.
WIP: Greta
Here’s the left front and back — an interesting use of twisted stitches to form a series of diamonds and garter stitch for a graceful scalloped hem. Let’s not forget a shaped waist and a notched collar. I regret not using a silk-blend, but that’s OK. I can live with it. Greta looks much darker than photographed. The color? Aubergine. No, really. Here we go again.

Once Spun, Twice Plied
The first roving was hairy and coarse, so I decided not to ply the first single and left it as is — a Lopi knock-off. This is my second practice roving, an Ashland Bay Colonial in some nameless multi-color. I spun this from the fold and used the Andean plying method. Yes, I’m an absolute beginner, so there’s those thick and thin bits, but it’s mine. All mine. I’m sure that with time, I’ll be able to perfect the different techniques, but I’m enjoying the moment and having a great time.

I can’t leave without mentioning Belinda’s 15 minutes of fame here (AKA Island Girl / Wool Bunny). Check out www.expatinterviews.com and read the experiences of expats abroad.

Greta is a neat pattern. Your spinning is coming along nicely. Very pretty.

The thing I have the most trouble with is trying to accurately guesstimate the yardage per gram.
I guess I’ll just ply and see what needle size(s) it’ll knit up on and just use a similar weight yarn as a gauge.
I’m so so impressed! :D

The hem on Great is amazing! And I really love your yarn, it looks wonderful. I haven’t tried spinning from the fold yet, was it hard?

It won’t let me see the pictures, so I’ll check back soon.

Julie: Thank you, I hope to finish her soon!
Belinda: Thank you :)
Now I get the spinning thing!
Erica: Thanks :)
Funny about plying, I think I enjoyed that more than learning how to spin (except for the brief paralysis from that Andean ply)!
Pat: Isn’t that a neat hem? Greta’s coming along nicely!
Sherie: Thank you, Sherie. I found it easier to spin from the fold with my heavier Golding (1.9 oz / 53 gm) than with my lighter Bosworth Mini (.77 oz / 22 gm). I wouldn’t know how spinning from the fold would translate using a spinning wheel as I’m trying really hard to avoid that path ;)
Rain: BBB (Bloglines / Blogger Burp) maybe?
Latoya: Thank you, Latoya. I hope the weather here stays cool enough for me to wear her :)

I’ve sorted it! Greta looks stunning so far, the colour is gorgeous.
